Solvitur

A Platform that Bridges the Gaps Between Providers and Users of Genetic Resources and Digital Sequence Information

A New Way Forward:

Driving the Adoption of Access and Benefit-Sharing Agreements Involving Genetic Resources and Digital Sequence Information (DSI)

We understand the challenges of navigating the complex international system governing the use of genetic information, including DSI.

With the deployment of AI and other technologies, we also recognize the critical importance of such information to innovation in areas including medicine, agriculture and energy.

Our gateway platform brings efficiency, equity and investment certainty to the international ABS system, including the Nagoya Protocol’s bilateral framework governing Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) agreements and the new multilateral system established for DSI under the Cali Decision.

By serving as an intermediary in these arrangements, Solvitur bridges the gaps between governments and indigenous communities with sovereignty over genetic information and those seeking to develop and commercialize new products and technologies based on that genetic information.

Our Mission:

solvitur ambulando
phrase / latin
solved by walking; the idea that something is understood or resolved through action rather than theory.

Solvitur ambulando is a Latin phrase meaning it is solved by walking. It captures the idea that a complex problem is best resolved through practical action, experience, or movement rather than protracted and abstract debate.

We established Solvitur, Inc. to apply this approach to a significant and enduring global issue: facilitating access to genetic information, including DSI, for the development of new products and technologies, while ensuring that benefit sharing is fair and equitable for countries and indigenous communities that own such information.

This “win-win” approach to the use of genetic resources was envisioned in the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity and was further advanced by the Nagoya Protocol. But, because of the complexity of the global system and differing national perspectives, it has not been fully realized.

Rather, with the recent emergence of new international agreements regulating discrete types and uses of genetic information, the ABS system has become even more challenging. These agreements include the Plant Treaty, BBNJ Agreement, PIP Framework and the Pandemic Agreement.

Now, while technology puts us on the brink of new discoveries, there is an urgent need for a new and more direct approach to solving this critical international problem and creating mutually beneficial solutions for providers and users of genetic information. These solutions will also strengthen efforts to protect the foundational source of genetic information itself – biological diversity.

This is the mission of Solvitur.

By actively working through licensing agreements and innovative collaboration agreements with governments, local communities, scientific partners, and industry, we create investment certainty and enable the fair and equitable exchange of genetic information for research and commercial activities.
